Change Labels

What is it?

The Change Labels tool allows you to select a number of pages/blogposts and add, remove, rename, merge, or split the labels attached to that content.  This tool not only supports single labels, but also multiple labels.

How can I use it?

Upon loading the Change Labels tool, you will be presented with the following screen:

At the top of the screen, you will see the options menu, and on the bottom of the screen, you will see the selection menu.    You can return to the page you were originally viewing at any time by clicking the "Go Back to Page" button.  The Change Labels tool has three modes: Choose Label Mode, Search Label Mode, and Show all Labels Mode.  You can switch between modes at any time by clicking on the "Switch Modes" button.

Modes

Choose Label Mode

This is the default mode that is loaded when you open this tool from the menu. If you want to look in blog posts as well as pages, make sure to click on the "Show Blogposts" checkbox.  Type the label/labels that you want to find in the child pages (multiple labels should be separated by a space), and after clicking on "Choose Label," the page tree will be built.  If the page has the label/labels, it will show HAS LABEL next to the page name.  If it doesn't have the label, it will show DOESN'T HAVE LABEL.  If you search for multiple labels and only one or more, but not all, labels are found on the page, it will show "Partial Match" next to the page name.

Search Label Mode

In this mode, you can search your entire Confluence instance for a particular label/labels by entering the desired label(s) in the input box and clicking on "Search Label."  The results will be shown filtered by space.

If you choose the "Show Blogposts" option, it will show only the results from blogposts. Otherwise it will show the results from pages.

Next to "Search Labels Mode", you will see the name of the label that you have searched for.  The pages will be shown underneath the space in which they are located with HAS LABEL next to the pages that contain the label(s) you have searched for.  Different from the Choose Label mode, this mode will only show an exact match for all search labels.  You can select all pages in a particular space by revealing the children selector buttons.

Show All Labels Mode

In this mode, you can see all labels in all pages which are descendants of the page on which you entered the Change Labels tool.  A page tree will be automatically built with all labels shown.

By clicking on the plus and minus icons next to the page, you can select/deselect all labels on that page.

Functions

If you try to perform actions on pages that you do not have edit access for, the status for the page will show NOT PERMITTED.

Adding Labels

Make sure the box is selected for the label/labels you want to add, and then click the "Add Labels" button.

Removing Labels

Make sure the box is selected for the label/labels you want to add, and then click the "Add Labels" button.

Renaming Labels

If you are in Choose Labels Mode or Search Labels Mode, once you enter the desired label(s) in the input box and click the button, the rename labels input box will automatically appear.  You can then type the label in the box that you want to rename to, and then simply click on the "Rename Labels" button.  If you made a mistake, you can also undo the rename process by clicking on the "Undo" button.

The rename function does not check to see if the label is already attached to the page, so if you rename the label to something new and then undo, the new label will be removed from the page, even if it was there originally. Be aware of this especially for undoing the split function!

Split Labels

This is done using the Rename function.  Simply choose a label that you want to split, and choose the labels that you want to split it into in the rename box.  (For example, if you want to split "administrators" into both "administrators" and "admins", search/choose "administrators" and rename to "administrators admins")

Merge Labels

This is also done using the Rename function.  Simply choose the labels that you want to merge, and choose the label that you want to merge into in the rename box.  (For example, if you want to merge "administrators" and "admins" back into "administrators", search/choose "administrators admins" and rename to "administrators")

Additional Information

I clicked on "Go Back To Page" and my labels were still the same?  What's going on?

By clicking "Go Back To Page", you are performing the same action as clicking on your browser's back button.  When you do so, the page is not yet refreshed with new content.  Your labels have been changed, but you need to refresh the page by clicking on the icon or pressing the F5 key.
